YMCA Spring into Summer 5K

As part of our year-long commitment to support a local nonprofit, SofterWare is working with the Ambler YMCA in Ambler, PA to volunteer our time for all their various events. And oh boy, do they have a lot of  events! Family nights, senior days at the pool, classes, trainings, you name it – they do it. What a great place!

Our most recent event was the Spring into Summer 5K, which featured hundreds of runners of all age groups. This included a bunch of great events, including:

  • Family Festival with games and activities for all ages
  • Free professionally supervised activities for children ages 3 years and up while parents run, including games, moon bounce, arts &  crafts, face painting, balloon animals, and many other activities for all ages
  • Free Kids dash for ages 9 and under
  • Family awards
  • Chip timing
  • Post race refreshments
  • T-shirt for runners and walkers
  • Local vendors and giveaways
  • Overall and age group awards, along with Fastest Family, Best Stroller Finish
  • And more!

From SofterWare, Justin Brauer and his finance Heather, Dave Boring, Eleanor Stasio, and Kathy Piunti were course marshals for the 5k, making sure no one lost their way or took a subway car to the finish line when they should have been running (I think that happened once).  Dave Gildea stayed with the kids while the parent’s ran, helping out in the day care & activities center. And Nathan Relles, our President, Co-founder, and chief runner, was all over the race telling jokes and ensuring everyone had a good time.

Once again, our very own Sam Stortz, who both volunteered and ran, won the race! Unlike the Pancreatic Cancer run in October, Sam managed to keep his shoes on this time and finished in record time (I’m not sure which record, but it seems like a cool thing to write). Hundreds of people enjoyed the race and all the associated activities (see below), and we continue to learn that volunteering is really a lot of fun for the volunteers!

Our Sam Stortz stand atop the podium as the race winner. We like to make fun of his jogging short shorts, but you can't argue with success!
